08+ WRX STi 3″ Magnaflow Exhaust Install and Sound Clips

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Recently we installed a Magnaflow 3″ Stainless Steel Catback exhaust on the www.IPGParts.com 2008 Impreza WRX STi.

Other parts on the car include Perrin Equal Length Header, Cobb Tuning Catted Downpipe, Cobb Accessport (tuned), BC Racing Coilovers, Volk Gramlight Wheels.

We loved the way the OEM exhaust sounded with the other parts installed on the car and really never had plans of changing it.  A great promotional deal on the Magnaflow exhaust system was offered so we figured we would at least give it a shot.  Out of most of the exhaust on the market for the 08+ WRX STi the Magnaflow is one of the nicer looking ones keeping with the Quad Tip design and not being over the top as far as looks.

The sound is very nice as well.  In conjuction with the Perrin EL Header and Cobb Catted downpipe we have a nice deep tone.  We definitely prefer the EL header sound versus the OEM Unequal Length Header sound on the WRX STi.  Purists will say we are nuts but that is the sound we prefer here at IPG.

Lamin-X Tail Light Overlays Installed on STi

Monday, June 28th, 2010

One of the things about our 2008 WRX STi that has irked us from the day we got the car was the clear tail lights.  With the use of the Lamin-X Tail Light Overlays we have fixed the appearance and are happy with the outcome.  The Lamin-X Overlays are an inexpensive film option that will still allow the correct amount of illumination from the Tail Light bulbs to shine through while completely changing the look of the rear of the car.  We chose to cut out the reverse lamp and turn signal sections to give it a great look.

Here are the Before and After Pictures:

First Mods to 2008 WRX STi Project Car

Monday, June 28th, 2010

After 6 months of ownership the first modifications have made their way onto our 2008 Subaru WRX STi.  With just over 5k miles on the odometer we chose to go with the Cobb Catted Downpipe and a custom tune performed by Omar at Central Florida Turbo.  These basic modifications are very easy to perform and provide a decent kick in the butt performance increase for the low cost invested.  We chose the Catted Cobb Downpipe since it easily mates to the OEM Catback exhaust and offers only a slight increase in noise level from the OEM Downpipe.

The dyno horsepower and torque #’s from CFT aren’t in line with the results we have seen from similar ’08+ STi’s so we will let the actual wheel horsepower and torque #’s be and just compare the percentage increase from the baseline #’s on the dyno.  With just the Cobb Downpipe bolted into place we saw a peak Horsepower Gain of 27 wheel horsepower and a Peak Torque Gain of 24 ft lbs of torque as measured at the wheels on CFT’s Mustang Chassis Dyno.  Throughout the RPM band we did see an average of 20-25 horsepower and 15-20 ft lbs of torque.  Peak torque comes in very early at 3750 RPM and peak horsepower comes in at 6250 RPM.  Overall the car is a lot smoother to drive and the increased power and torque isn’t anything to ignore either.  Ultimately all this has really done is give us the thirst for even more horsepower so plans are already under way to what direction we will be going to see considerable gains in the near future.
